Hot Shooting Night Not Enough as Essex County College Falls 113–94
The Essex County College men's basketball team battled on the road Wednesday night but fell to Raritan Valley Community College, 113–94, in a high-scoring matchup on February 19.
Despite the loss, the Wolverines delivered an efficient offensive performance, shooting 46.8 percent from the field, 56.3 percent from three-point range, and 81.8 percent from the free-throw line. However, Raritan Valley's offensive firepower proved too much to overcome.
Sophomore guard Jaden Reid led the charge for Essex County College with a game-high 29 points. Reid was electric from beyond the arc, knocking down 5-of-8 three-pointers, while adding five rebounds and a pair of assists. He consistently attacked the defense and converted all four of his free-throw attempts.
Jason Martinez provided a major spark off the bench, pouring in 23 points in a highly efficient outing. Martinez connected on 6-of-9 shots from the floor, went a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range, and added eight made free throws. His energy and scoring punch kept Essex within striking distance throughout the contest.
Ethan Laquindanum added 19 points, six rebounds, four assists, and three steals in a strong all-around effort. Rodney Willis Jr. anchored the paint with 11 points and a team-high 10 rebounds to record a double-double, while also protecting the rim with three blocked shots.
As a team, Essex showed balance with 10 assists and 30 total rebounds, including seven offensive boards. The Wolverines also demonstrated defensive activity with eight steals and four blocks. However, turnovers and defensive lapses allowed Raritan Valley to build separation in the second half.
