Essex Men’s Basketball Falls to Monroe University, 109–69

Newark, NJ-The Essex County College men's basketball team battled a nationally competitive Monroe University squad on Thursday night but came up short in a 109–69 loss at home.

Jason Martinez led Essex with 18 points and eight rebounds, shooting an efficient 7-for-10 from the field and knocking down three three-pointers. Carl Matala added a team-high 20 points, connecting on six shots from beyond the arc and providing a spark offensively throughout the game.

Gabriel Morales finished with 12 points, hitting four three-pointers, while Rodney Willis Jr. contributed eight points. Jaden Reid chipped in six points off the bench, and Ryan English added three points along with a steal and a block.

Francis Demfack Tatanfack anchored the paint for Essex with a strong all-around effort despite not scoring, recording a double-double with 11 rebounds and 10 assists to go along with solid interior defense.

As a team, Essex hit 14 three-pointers and totaled 20 assists, moving the ball effectively against Monroe's pressure. Monroe, ranked 17–4 entering the contest, used its depth and pace to pull away in the second half.

Despite the loss, Essex showed flashes of offensive firepower and resilience against a high-level opponent as the team continues conference play.
