Essex County College SAAC Inspire Newark Youth Through Community Service "Reading with Athletes"

Newark, NJ — The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) at Essex County College kicked off the year by giving back to the Newark community through an impactful service initiative, Reading with Athletes, at Ironbound Academy.

The event reflected SAAC's commitment to community engagement and youth development, bringing ECC student-athletes together with local middle school students to promote education, mentorship, and positive role modeling. SAAC President Xiomara Rivera, a student-athlete and captain of the women's soccer team, led the initiative by sharing her personal story and emphasizing how education and perseverance have shaped her journey both academically and athletically.

Rivera was joined by fellow SAAC members, including sophomore basketball student-athletes Jason Martinez and Gabriel Morales, who brought energy and enthusiasm throughout the day. Whether reading alongside students or joining 7th and 8th graders on the court, the athletes fostered meaningful connections and encouraged students to stay engaged, confident, and motivated. Freshman basketball players Christian Hampton and Shayne McCray also played an important role, sparking thoughtful conversations and inspiring students to ask questions about leadership, responsibility, and what it means to be a student-athlete.

The success of the event was made possible through the collaboration between Melanie Oliveira, Social Worker at Ironbound Academy, and Booker McLean, Assistant Athletic Director at Essex County College. Their partnership ensured the experience was welcoming, organized, and impactful for both the students and the visiting athletes.

Throughout the day, SAAC reinforced a core message of giving back to the community through education, mentorship, and positive behavior. By combining literacy, athletics, and open dialogue, Reading with Athletes served as a powerful example of how student-athletes can make a meaningful difference beyond the playing field.

Overall, the initiative was a tremendous success and highlighted the strong partnership between Essex County College and Ironbound Academy—demonstrating how community service and athletics can work together to inspire and uplift the next generation in Newark.
