Newark, NJ | A strong second-half performance and a standout showing from Xiomara Rivera powered the Essex County College women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Lackawanna College on home turf.
After a scoreless first half despite numerous chances, Rivera broke through in the 55th minute with an unassisted goal, calmly finishing after creating space on her own. She added her second of the match in the 75th minute, this time assisted by Martine Joazard, to give the Wolverines the cushion they needed.
Essex dominated possession and outshot Lackawanna 19-6, creating consistent pressure throughout the match. The Wolverines also held a commanding edge in corner kicks, 9-0, showing their attacking intent from start to finish.
On the defensive end, goalkeeper Brihana Staple was rock-solid, recording 5 saves and keeping a clean sheet across the full 90 minutes.
Lackawanna keeper Elizabeth DePrimo was tested early and often, making 16 saves despite conceding twice.
