UCNJ Edges Essex Women, 65–59, in Physical February Battle
Newark, NJ- The Essex County College women's basketball team showed grit and fight until the final horn, but a late push by UCNJ proved just enough as Essex fell, 65–59, in a hard-fought matchup on Thursday night.
Essex stayed within striking distance all game, leaning on strong individual efforts and relentless work on the glass. Mia-Marie Thomas led all scorers for the Lady Wolverines, pouring in 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting, adding five rebounds, three assists, and five steals in an all-around performance that kept Essex competitive from start to finish.
Aniya Brown also delivered a strong night, finishing with 14 points, including two three-pointers, while adding three steals and two assists. Gabriella Brown chipped in nine points, converting five free throws, while Essence Cushionberry anchored the interior with a double-double of seven points and 10 rebounds, pulling down three offensive boards.
Despite struggling from the field, Essex made up ground at the free-throw line, shooting 71.4 percent (30-of-42) and using aggressive play to pressure the UCNJ defense. Kayley Lynch added 10 rebounds, while Natalie Fonseca contributed five boards and three steals, helping Essex win the rebounding battle 40–30.
Turnovers and cold shooting ultimately proved costly, as Essex shot 26.5 percent from the floor and committed 23 turnovers, allowing UCNJ to capitalize late. Still, the Lady Wolverines refused to fold, cutting the deficit to single digits in the final minutes before time ran out.
The next game will be played Tuesday 2/10 at Harcum College at 5pm!
