Strong Second-Half Push Lifts Essex Past Middlesex, 67–62
Ediso, NJ - The Essex County College women's basketball team earned a hard-fought road victory Tuesday night, edging Middlesex College 67–62 in a Region 19 matchup at Middlesex in Edison.
Essex set the tone early, jumping out to a 16–9 lead after the first quarter behind strong defensive pressure. Middlesex answered in the second, outscoring the Wolverines 22–17 to narrow the gap heading into halftime, but Essex stayed composed and leaned on balanced contributions throughout the lineup.
The turning point came in the third quarter, where the Wolverines put together their strongest stretch of the night, outscoring Middlesex 21–19 to regain momentum. Essex continued to execute down the stretch, closing the game with a disciplined fourth quarter to secure the five-point win.
Gabriella Brown led all scorers with a standout performance, pouring in 27 points on 11-of-22 shooting while adding four steals on the defensive end. Aniya Brown chipped in 11 points and seven rebounds, while Mia-Marie Thomas added eight points and steady play at the guard position. Off the bench, Katherinne Avecillas made a strong impact with seven points, nine rebounds, and two blocks.
The Wolverines controlled the glass, finishing with a 42–38 rebounding advantage, and capitalized at the free-throw line, knocking down 20 shots from the stripe. Essex also forced key turnovers late, helping seal the road victory.
Essex County College returns to action Thursday night at home as they host Region 19 Conference opponent Union for a 6:00 p.m. tip-off, marking the second meeting between the two teams this season.
