Lady Wolverines Fall to Region 19 |GSAC Conference Opponent Mercer

West Windsor Township, N.J. — The Essex County College women's basketball team dropped an 82–64 decision to Mercer County Community College on Saturday in a Region 19 conference matchup.

The Lady Wolverines battled early, trailing just 16–15 after the opening quarter, but Mercer used a strong second and third period to create separation. Mercer outscored Essex 23–10 in the second quarter and followed with a decisive 27–18 run in the third to build a double-digit lead heading into the final frame. Essex closed with a strong fourth quarter (21–16) but was unable to overcome the deficit.

Offensively, Essex was led by sophomore guard, Katherinne Avecillas, who finished with a team-high 16 points, knocking down 3-of-3 from beyond the arc while adding 10 rebounds, three assists, two steals, and two blocks for a well-rounded performance. Sophmore center, Kayley Lynch recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while sophomore guard, Aniya Brown contributed 13 points and four assists. Sophmore foward, Michelle Hernandez added 11 points and nine rebounds, and Freshman guard, Gabriella Brown chipped in four points and four assists.

As a team, Essex shot 46.9% from the field (23-for-49) and collected 43 rebounds, but turnovers and Mercer's offensive surge in the middle quarters proved costly.

The Lady Wolverines will look to bounce back quickly as they return to the floor against another Region 19 Conference opponent, traveling to face Middlesex College on Tuesday, February 3rd at 5:00 p.m. in Edison, New Jersey.
