Essex Women’s Basketball Holds Off Westchester, 68–64

Newark, NJ- The Essex County College women's basketball team earned a hard-fought 68–64 victory over Westchester Community College on Tuesday night, using balanced scoring, strong defense, and timely plays down the stretch to secure the win.

Essence Cushionberry led all scorers for Essex with 15 points, adding five rebounds, two steals, and a block while shooting 6-for-15 from the field. Gabriella Brown followed with 11 points, knocking down two three-pointers and contributing two assists and two steals.

Aniya Brown delivered an all-around performance, finishing with 11 points, eight rebounds, and four assists, while Kayley Lynch added five points and five rebounds. Natalie Fonseca provided a spark off the bench with eight points and six rebounds, and Michelle Hernandez was perfect from the field, scoring six points on 2-for-2 shooting while grabbing six boards and blocking two shots.

Katherinne Avecillas played a key role defensively and offensively off the bench, scoring 10 points on 4-for-6 shooting, hitting two three-pointers, and recording an impressive seven steals to disrupt Westchester's offense.

As a team, Essex shot 43.1 percent from the field and forced turnovers with active defense, totaling 14 steals and six blocks. Despite Westchester keeping the game close late, Essex remained composed at the free-throw line and made enough defensive stops to seal the four-point victory.

The win improves Essex's momentum as the team continues conference play, showcasing depth, defensive intensity, and balanced scoring across the roster.

The Wolverines next game will be played home this Saturday 1/24 at 12pm vs Passaic County Community College.
