Mercer Hands Essex 89–63 Loss
Newark, NJ- Essex County College women's basketball dropped an 89–63 decision to Mercer County Community College on Wednesday night despite a strong effort and balanced scoring from the Lady Wolverines.
Gabriella Brown led Essex with a game-high 19 points, knocking down five three-pointers and providing a spark on the offensive end. Mia-Marie Thomas added 12 points, attacking the basket consistently and going 10-for-14 from the free-throw line. Essence Cushionberry and Aniya Brown each chipped in 10 points, with Cushionberry also pulling down eight rebounds.
Essex showed fight on the boards, outrebounding Mercer in stretches and finishing with 38 total rebounds. Kayley Lynch anchored the inside with 12 rebounds, while also contributing defensively with a block. The Wolverines also shared the ball well, recording 10 assists as a team.
Off the bench, Natalie Fonseca provided a boost with seven points and a steal, while Michelle Hernandez grabbed six rebounds to help maintain energy in the rotation.
Although Mercer pulled away in the second half, Essex connected on 50 percent of its three-point attempts (9-for-18) and continued to compete until the final buzzer.
The Wolverines will look to build on the positives from this performance as they prepare for their next matchup.
The next game will be away on Saturday, Dec. 20th against Delaware Technical Community College.
