Essex Men’s Track Delivers Championship Performance at METS with Title, Runner-Up Finish, and National Qualifier

Queens, NY (April 2026) – The Essex County College men's outdoor track and field team turned in a standout performance this past Friday at the METS Outdoor Championships at the iconic Icahn Stadium, highlighted by a championship victory, runner-up finish, and multiple personal bests against a highly competitive field.

Freshman Iddrisu Musah led the way in spectacular fashion, capturing the METS Championship title in the 200-meter dash with a blazing time of 21.66, finishing first out of 50 competitors. Musah continued his dominant day with a runner-up finish in the 400-meter dash, clocking 48.15 to secure second place.

The Wolverines showed strong depth in the 200 meters, with Sanjay Weekes placing ninth (22.48), followed by Gideon Griffin (30th, 23.38) and Raziel O'Meally (32nd, 23.51). In the 400 meters, Issah Abdul Rahaman (13th, 50.61) and Weekes (15th, 50.73) added solid performances, while Griffin (24th, 52.14) and O'Meally (34th, 54.96) rounded out the group.

Distance standout Matthew Grano had an impressive meet, recording personal bests in both the 1500-meter and 5000-meter runs. Grano placed eighth out of a large 234-runner field in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:05.20 and followed it up with a seventh-place finish in the 5000 meters, clocking 15:43.26.

In the field events, Nafew Mohammad delivered a dominant performance in the javelin, winning the event with a throw of 66.66 meters (218' 8"). His mark qualifies him for nationals and currently ranks #5 on the NJCAA national list.

The Wolverines also competed in both relay events, with the 4x100-meter relay team (Weekes, Griffin, O'Mealy, Musah) finishing seventh in 43.25. The 4x400-meter relay team (Weekes, Griffin, Abdul, Musah) secured a fourth-place finish with a time of 3:22.91.

"Today was a complete team effort," said Essex Head Coach, Bruce Berry. "Iddrisu's championship performance, Nafew's national qualifying throw, and the number of personal bests across the board show how much this team is progressing as we head into the final stretch of the season."

The Wolverines will look to carry this momentum forward as they return to competition next Saturday at Rowan University.
