West Windsor, NJ | Essex Wolverines men's soccer team put up a determined fight but came up just short in a 1–0 loss to NJCAA Division II No. 2-ranked Mercer County Community College on Saturday afternoon.
Mercer netted the game's only goal in the first half, and despite several second-half pushes from Essex, the Wolverines were unable to break through the defense.
Freshman Marques McDonald and sophomore Kristijan Penic each recorded a shot on goal, as Essex created a few quality chances in a tightly contested match. Defensively, the Wolverines showed composure and discipline against a high-powered Mercer offense.
Though the result didn't go their way, Essex's effort against one of the top-ranked programs in the nation signals a strong competitive edge as the season progresses.
The Wolverines will look to rebound in their next match up on the road against Monroe University on October 7th at 3:00pm.
